If your garage floor coating looks anything like this, then you are in the right place! Our garages are not just grimy homes for our vehicles and boxes. They are the best location for most American’s workshop, home gym, storage area, and so much more. These spaces need to function well, and looking good wouldn’t hurt! A garage floor coating is the quickest upgrade that can have one of the biggest impacts on a garage to get it back on pace to being a high functioning space.

Terrazzo
If you’re partial to the natural stone or mosaic aesthetic, then a terrazzo epoxy system could be the choice for you. This system actually dates back hundreds of years, but the original systems used cementitious binders. Here at Sandy Springs Epoxy Flooring Company, we use a modern epoxy resin binder which allows us to achieve the same mosaic effect of classic terrazzo but is a lighter and more appealing solution. Terrazzo has the same characteristics of modern day epoxy systems and can be ready for walking within 24-48 hours.

Epoxy Countertops
Floors aren’t the only thing that take a beating from everyday life and they're definitely not the only surface we want to look attractive! Epoxy flooring systems can actually be looked at as epoxy systems on hard surfaces - enter the epoxy countertop! One of the best design & durability upgrades you can add to a kitchen island or garage workbench is installing epoxy on your countertops. With a ton of design options, we’re sure we can find one that fits your home’s aesthetic.

How Epoxy Systems Work
If you're here, you've assumedly heard about how awesome epoxy flooring is. We constantly hear about the durability, longevity, and overall protection epoxy can provide. But what is it? How does it work? We here at Sandy Springs Epoxy Flooring Company are happy to help you understand!
In the simplest terms, an epoxy coating is composed of two parts, a resin and a curing agent (a polyepoxide resin and a curative compound). These are mixed immediately before they are applied to a surface (timing is important!). As they are mixed and applied, a chemical reaction occurs that bonds both the two part mixture together as well as to the applied surface itself. This results in a coating that is stronger than any of the parts alone. But how does this all happen?
Phase 1: The most important part of the installation process is floor preparation. If this is not done correctly, the entire install could end with poor results.
Phase 2: Mix epoxy materials and prepare to install.
Phase 3: Install Epoxy

These are mixed immediately before they are applied to a surface (timing is important!). As they are mixed and applied, a chemical reaction occurs that bonds both the two part mixture together as well as to the applied surface itself. This results in a coating that is stronger than any of the parts alone. But how does this all happen?
Phase 1: The most important part of the installation process is floor preparation. If this is not done correctly, the entire install could end with poor results.
- Any pre-existing or remnants of old floor coatings will be removed.
- All damage such as divots, holes, spalling, etc caused from previous surface removal (or already existing) will be repaired.
- Once repaired, a full cleaning is completed to make sure no dust or debris are on the surface prior to application of epoxy.
- Sometimes, the surface will be acid etched or roughened to enhance adhesion between epoxy mixture and application surface. If roughening occurs, the cleaning will need to take place after this step.
- Sometimes, there will be final testing to ensure the floor is ready to receive epoxy material. Tests include moisture testing, oil deposit testing, and curing compound testing. Unique situations require additional attention, but these are standard.
Phase 2: Mix epoxy materials and prepare to install.
- Minutes before installation of the epoxy, the dual parts are mixed together in a bucket or deep pan. Mixing should always occur with a drill & stirring bit to ensure proper mixing. At Sandy Springs Epoxy Flooring Company, once the materials have been mixed in a bucket, the combined product is transferred to a second container for additional mixing to ensure maximum effectiveness of the floor coating.
- The part-to-part ratios differ amongst different epoxy systems. The important part is to make sure the manufacture’s instruction are followed for the timing of mixing to installation. There will be no issues as long as these are followed.
Phase 3: Install Epoxy
- The area of work is sectioned off using tape and pour stop as needed.
- Just like painting, the perimeter and edges are cut in, usually with a brush.
- The first layer of epoxy is then either rolled on or poured and trowelled across the field of installation. The tools will vary based on the epoxy floor coating system decided upon as well as the location of the installation.
- After the first coat is installed, a second coat will be applied shortly thereafter.
- Any color additives, mosaics, color additions, or extra non-skid material (small aggregate) will be applied after initial coat, before final coat. Once added, the final coat will be installed.
- Once the final coat is installed, the epoxy floor coating will cure. This takes between 24-48 hours, depending, locking the system in place.

Benefits of Epoxy Flooring
Benefit #1: Durability
The most talked about reason have for installing epoxy flooring is the durability of the product. Epoxy systems will stand up better to wear and tear than unfinished concrete - take more damage, maintain a more consistent surface, and reduce cracking.
This doesn’t stop at foot traffic. Epoxy floor coatings stand up to everything: foot traffic, vehicle traffic, and full on industrial work spaces.
Benefit #2: Easy to Clean
While a decent amount of dust and debris will be removed from concrete with relative ease, it is still a porous and uneven surface that will allow a lot of small particles to remain after standard cleaning.
Epoxy flooring is a nonporous shield and does not allow for stains from oils or other materials. Dust & spills wipe away easily atop a garage floor coating.
Benefit #3: Chemically Resistant
The other nice part about having an easy to clean surface that is non porous? Chemical resistance!
Epoxy coatings being non-porous stop all chemicals from being absorbed into the surface they were applied to. Safety bonuses on top of cleanliness as less harmful chemicals will be present with your new garage floor coating.
Benefit #4: Slip Resistant
Epoxy flooring systems are inherently slip resistant. Because of the two-part install process, there is always the option on projects to add additional non-slip materials (small aggregates or sand) to make your space extra safe!
Benefit #5: Longevity
All these great benefits don’t matter much if the floor coating doesn’t last long. Epoxy floor coatings, from high aesthetic metallic epoxy to standard garage floor coatings, will always last for years on end. Often with 10-15 year warranties, depending on the project.
Sandy Springs Epoxy Flooring Company, an industry leading epoxy flooring company, only installs to the highest degree and offers warranty options.
